There was a long, unbearable silence. It was a strange kind of silence because just a few moments ago there were a lot of ksshk-kssshking going on. Now there was complete and utter silence. The FM radio wasn’t turned on, the walkie-talkie seems to have died, and the passengers were quiet.
Kat wondered why everyone else was quiet. You’d think someone would at least clear his throat after a statement like that. Surely someone other than Kat heard it?
A frail, old woman beside Kat was sleeping with her head resting on the window. Her hands gripped tightly onto a Coach replica bag. When you live in the Metro you learn to understand that even in a public vehicle full of women, your purse is not safe. Thieves and muggers are not gender exclusive.
To her right was the ovulating girl. Kat smiled at how Ovulating Girl made her sound like a superhero. Damn, that would have been great. Kat would need a superhero when she gets cornered by the defensive, bloodthirsty natives of an ancient organization. A superhero, or at least a chainsaw would have been nice but Ovulating Girl had her iPod earphones on and like Kat, when you’re lost in the power of your mp3 player, nothing can ever faze you.
No, not even an open conversation about murder.
The driver was quiet. There was no ksshhk-kssshking for a long while. His face which was beaming with laughter and good nature just a few moments ago turned stern and grim. Kat can see his profile, he would blink a couple of times but his face never budged.
“You heard me?” the driver’s coarse voice sliced through the thick silence. When Kat looked up the rear view mirror she saw the driver staring right at her. Kat have never seen eyes like that before. There was something cold and wild and animalistic in them, like a mad man in rapture.
Her breathing stopped.
Kat opened her trembling mouth to speak. Should she say yes?
Kksssshk kssssshhk!
“Yep, I heard you. We’re here already. Hurry the fuck up man” the voice on the other end of the walkie-talkie said.
When Kat looked up at the mirror again, there were no eyes staring right back at her anymore.
