Marie tightened her grip on the dead bird. “We can still be a family, right? One, big, happy family.” Her mother’s face grew pale but held back a scream. This upset Marie but she forced a smile with a little hope of making her new family “work”. It was her chance to make things just like she always wanted. She looked at her father with disapproval, “Papa, won’t you smile for me?”
“You don’t scare me, Marie.” Her father showed no sign of fear for his new daughter. His hand inched closer to his mobile phone as he tried to divert Marie’s attention to his eyes. Marie walked towards them and threw the bloody bird at her father. “No, you don’t!” The girl lunged at him and stabbed his forearm with the plastic knife after they landed.
Louis screamed in pain and his phone fell to the floor. Marie’s mother tried to reach for it but Marie slashed her face before she could reach the phone.
“Annie!” Louis cried out. “You fucking bitch!”
“You started it, Papa. You’re…” Marie was at a loss for words. It was almost as if she had just forgotten what happened. Louis wiped away the blood and tears from Annie’s face then shifted his attention to Marie. “What the hell do you want from us?!”
“A happy family.” Marie answered as if it were so simple. She picked up the bird again and inspected it before throwing it at Louis. He caught the bird only to let go with another scream. Marie stabbed his ankle. “I’m sorry but you might run away.”
Marie paused for a moment, looked at both of them then muttered, “It’s going to be alright.”
Tears began to roll down Marie’s cheeks but her face was filled with anger. She trembled but not from sadness but from rage. Her grip on the knife tightened.
