The Night I Almost Became a Superhero

To say that I was feverish last night would probably be an understatement. I was .1 away from Hyperthermia. I wasn’t sweating anymore and it just seems like the fever is only getting uncontrollably higher. The other people in the room were sweating like crazy but me? No, not me. I was taking all the heat in like a sponge. They could have put an egg in my mouth and after two minutes it would have come out hard-boiled.

I started to hurt the people I touched because of my burning hands and feet. A whole bag of ice melts about 5 minutes upon contact with my forehead. It seemed almost natural for me to be shooting fireballs out of the palm of my hand and for a while, I really believed I could.

At one point, when I was delirious, I saw Morpheus. Oneiros. The Dream Lord himself. He approached me and called me by my whole name. I asked him if I was dreaming. Yes, I know right? Ask the Dream Lord if you’re dreaming, very clever. He did not answer. Instead he asked me what I thought would come after death, I answered truthfully, I said I didn’t know. Who does, anyway? He said “Nothing.” Yeah, he said nothing comes after death. You just die and then you cease to exist and then there’s nothing. No hell, no heaven, no purgatory no reincarnation… nothing.

And then I was given the view of hell from Sandman: Seasons of Mist. The part where Lucifer abandoned Hell and it was empty. I don’t know why he showed it to me. But I guess that’s the best part about dreams, you don’t have to make sense out of it.

Hmm, yes maybe I have been reading too much. But think about it! The situation has all the makings of a superhero story! I was absorbing more heat than I can dissipate. I wasn’t sweating. Things were melting upon contact with my skin. I’m telling you, if I waited a bit more I could have casted a mean Fire Bolt! or, I could have died. But that’s how superheroes are made!

I’m still recovering and right now I’m on my way to the hospital to have everything checked. So… in the meantime may I refer you to the Fantasy section? XD

Playing as a Demon

This won’t take long. I go to this forum called Vindicta. The only thing that breathes life into it nowadays would be pictures of cute asian girls and glasses-girls doing asian poses, that and Roleplaying.

So before you think that roleplaying is some kinky forum shit that we do, for the sake of discussion I’ll describe what it is when you put it in the context of a forum activity.

An RP is a long-forgotten game of “continue the story above you.” I say long-forgotten because people are not as enthusiastic in Roleplaying like before. Back in the day, people really took this seriously and almost all forums have at least several RPs going for them, each take up an incredible amount of space and the recipient of creativity overload. My first RP I think was in an invisionfree forum and I was playing the younger sister of a powerful mage. I remember how much fun it was to ride on someone else’s plot and make others look naturally cool.

You can be one of THEM!

You can be one of THEM!

Roleplaying in forums should not be mistakened with table-top games. Those are completely different and the rules in Roleplaying are much, much simpler. You create a character, buff him up with skills and traits (depending on the nature of your RP) describe his appearance, put up a brief history to explain his personality and then you push that character in the grand scheme of things.

Everyone else has their own character and you will all contribute to one single plot. You will make your character interact with another player’s character and so on and so forth until you have completed the whole story and the RP will be over.

Who decides it’s over? Who makes the rules? Who makes the plot twists and turns and conflict?

The interesting part here is that everyone has a hand in altering the story. It’s actually… magical, how it all happens. In a mysterious and amusing way, everybody and everything will fall into place and develop into an interesting story in the end.

Having said that, I’m currently involved in an RP with friends called, “Heaven and Heck.” In this RP, we play as demons in the great epic battle of good (angels) versus evil (demons). Throughout the RP, we would be trying to tempt humans in order to build the bigger army (as compared to the other side) when Armageddon comes. My character is Lacrimosa, a demon taking the form of a 5-year old girl. She specializes in despair and makes humans lose faith and hope in The Big Man Up There. Usually, things get out of hand and they end up killing themselves, but that’s just a plus.

Segments of my RP Posts can be found posted here under the Fantasy section:

Lacrimosa
Lacrimosa Pt. 2
Lacrimosa Pt. 3

It may look fuzzy and incoherent but that’s because my part of the story is just a small part out of everyone else’s. If you want to read the whole thing, you can join Vindicta and be part of us! :D

Go Ahead, Pick it Up

I came across this blog someone posted on plurk. It was her boyfriend’s blog. Interesting, really.

It’s that something you’ve always known in your head and then someone actually said it out loud and said it like you can only hope you could. I found myself reading it and smiling because it’s a feeling that I can relate to.

Now I won’t just repeat everything that he said so you go ahead and read it, okay? Read this now please!

GAIMAN AND A PANDA! HAH!

GAIMAN AND A PANDA! HAH!

Anyway, the blog post mentioned Gaiman and about how he was enjoyed by the super special chosen few before it hit mainstream. I admit that I wasn’t one of the hardcore First Dwellers in Gaiman’s fanbase.

However, I’m not completely new to his works either. I was that girl who picked up Anansi Boys because that was the only Gaiman book in the bookstore.

There was a time that my ex-boyfriend had to hop through five bookstores just to buy me a copy of American Gods for my birthday.

So yeah, I did feel a little annoyed when all of a sudden, the book that I had such a hard time getting is now right there next to the Twilight books.

But the guy did present a good point.

The fact that so many people are reading books that used to be enjoyed only by a select few means that the standards of the general reading public are improving. More money for these brilliant authors translate to more treats for the readers. So I shouldn’t be complaining, really.

Neither should you. :)

So you’re a new reader and you happen to like Gaiman. I can’t blame you. He’s not very difficult to like. Here’s an advice you probably don’t need but an advice that I would still give you anyways: don’t let the snobs discourage you from reading. Do not be ashamed that it’s your first time to pick up a particular author’s book.

book snobs out to get ya!

book snobs out to get ya!

Do not feel bad when book snobs and elitists snort and say “You can’t possibly read that book the way the writer intended it to be read” Because really, there is no right or wrong way to read a book. There is no right interpretation. The writer wanted you to like it and if you like it, who cares what the book snobs say? The writer’s work is done. I doubt that when a writer gets published, he’d pray with all of his might that only a select few will find out about his work and like it.

There is no such thing as “too late to read it.” There is no shame in reading a book because the hype brought it to your doorstep. If you’re one of the few who found out about a certain book way ahead of everyone else, then well and good. if you found out about a book because of all the exposure and hype surrounding it, nothing wrong with that either.

However, give the book and the story due respect. Like it and tell other people about it only if you really like it. Do not pretend to admire a piece of literature just because everyone else has the same opinion.
